You'll find plenty of trails to suit all ages and abilities, and equipment is available for hire from most of the on-mountain rental outlets. Best of all, access to cross country trails is usually free.
Alpine trails and mountain views
Lake Mountain, renowned as Australia's premier cross-country ski resort and the third most-visited cross-country alpine resort in the world, offers a network of well-marked beginner and advanced trails spanning 39 kilometres. Falls Creek is another popular resort among cross country afficiados, featuring 65 kilometres of groomed and patrolled trails along with the 'Nordic Bowl', an excellent spot for beginners and children alike.
Mt Buller is known for its downhill slopes, but it's worth taking some time to explore its nine kilometres of cross country trails with panoramic views of Mt Stirling and the Bluff. Located just 30 minutes away, Mt Stirling offers 68 kilometres of pristine cross country trails and snow camping sites. Looking for a challenge? Test your stamina on the fantastic 10 kilometre trail from Dinner Plain up to Mt Hotham through beautiful bushland and snow gums.

The highlight of the Victorian cross-country skiing calendar is The Kangaroo Hoppet, Australia's premier long distance cross-country ski race. It's held at Falls Creek on the last Saturday in August each year.
