Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive – inland route

Take the inland route from Melbourne to Sydney, joining up with the coast after you've had your fill of farm-fresh produce and crisp mountain air. Be sure to stop in Walhalla on the way and get a glimpse of life as it was in the gold rush era. Wander through this town of less than 20 residents that's been lovingly preserved as it was in its 1860s gold-mining heyday.

Drive on to the regional hubs of Bairnsdale and Sale, and then hit the coast at the expansive Ninety Mile Beach. Bust out your hiking boots or hire a boat to explore the pristine waterways of the Gippsland Lakes. Next stop is the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve of Croajingolong National Park before the journey continues up the coast to Sydney.
