Overview

Regional coffee

Don't let leaving the city incite fear of caffeine withdrawal. Regional Victoria is full of beans, roasting and brewing top drops that rival the work of the best bearded city baristas. Move over questionable motel sachets, we're talking single origin beans and brews, pour-overs, siphons and cold drip at cafes and roasteries in places flung far and near.

Find the best places to stop for a coffee, villages worth wandering to just for a cuppa, and plenty of places to bag freshly roasted beans to take home.

Roasters

Wander regional Victoria for a proper roasting: roasters are bringing the best beans to town, boasting a brief journey from bush to brew and offering freshly roasted beans to take home as well as fine cuppas to enjoy on site.

In Daylesford, you do have to go round the outside to find Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar, but it's well worth it for its single-origin beans and brews. In Malmsbury, micro-batch roasted beans at Moto Bean coffee roasters gets locals and visitors revved.

Phillip Island is home to handcrafted micro coffee roaster, eatery and produce store, BEANd, where small batches of beans from around the world are roasted daily. In Geelong, the big guns at Coffee Cartel Roasters bring speciality beans from Latin America and Africa home to roast. Buy them by the bag along with seasonal blends.

For a new view of the roasting process, watch the bean's journey to your cup at Bendigo's Brewhouse Coffee Roasters. In Castlemaine, get back to basics at the Woollen Mills, home of small batch coffee roastery and cafe Das Kaffeehaus – Coffee Basics.

Hit the Great Ocean Road for speciality brews with views. Ocean Grind micro roastery in Jan Juc delivers handcrafted coffee to your door as well as to local cafes. In Apollo Bay, you'll be greeted with speciality coffee and beans at roastery and cafe Hello Coffee, and in Warrnambool, Piccolo Coffee Roasters serve up big, sustainable flavours.

Head for the hills to find freshly roasted single origin beans and blends at Mansfield Coffee Merchant. Alp yourself to beans and brews at small-batch roastery Sixpence Coffee in Bright, and talk serious coffee over espresso, cold drip, pour over or siphon at the Blynzz Coffee Roasters' brew bar in Beechworth.

Cafes

Bean there, done that? These cafes in regional Victoria's villages serve up the best local roasts and blends, priding themselves on specialty brews that will make sure you don't miss your city local.

On Phillip Island, make a pit stop at the Porter Republic, San Remo and The Big Wave Cafe, Newhaven. In the Goldfields, Bendigo's Naked Espresso, and Ballarat's Little Bird and Yellow Espresso all pride themselves on a fine brew. In the High Country, Myrtleford's Coffee Chakra ups the caffeine flow, Yackandandah's Saint Monday pours a heavenly cup, and Wangaratta's Café Derailleur will keep you on the right track.

And that's just for starters. Go forth and wander. You may never return to your old local.
