Kick off your tour at relaxed Mount Buninyong Winery: maybe wood-fired pizza on a picnic blanket or board games by the fireplace. Head to Ballarat and ditch the car for a wander. Athletic Club Brewery is a small-batch community brewery; ask about self-brew sessions. The Mallow is a friendly pub with local craft beer on tap. Mitchell Harris Wines showcases its own cool climate range as part of a broad-ranging list; the food is great, too. Gin is the thing at passion-fuelled Kilderkin Distillery but there's also whisky on the way. Head towards Castlemaine, stopping 40 kilometres along the route at Captains Creek, where the wines and farm produce are organic and there's accommodation if you feel like breaking the tour. It's a further 50 kilometres to Castlemaine where you can pull up a stool at The Taproom for the house beers, or enjoy sustenance all day, every day at Public INN at the old fire station. Just beyond town is Henry of Harcourt, a family-run cider producer, where you can sample the wares overlooking a duck pond. 128km
