Episode 11: Great Escapes
Postcards has a bunch of great HotelClub deals for you on the first Great Escape special for this year. Join host Rebecca Judd and the team to check out everything from fabulous bayside accommodation, to a gorgeous getaway near Daylesford. Our Suzuki Sunday Drive, on motorbike no less, shows off the Great Ocean road at its best, but it's the step back in time to visit one of Melbourne's most iconic hotels, The Rendezvous, that will have viewers in awe of just how much history there is in our own backyard.
Mingela Homestead and Malmsbury Bakery and Gallery
With its deep bluestone gutters and original 1850s buildings, Malmsbury is a village with a character all of its own. You'll find it about an hour's drive from Melbourne, on the old Calder Freeway, with Kyneton, Daylesford, Castlemaine and Bendigo all just a short drive away. Malmsbury has a long proud history of looking after weary travelers on their way to the goldfields, so it's good to know that these days you can still stop off for a slice of cake, some baked goods or a hearty meal at the Malmsbury Bakery and Gallery. The bakery was established by Jan Grant 26 years ago and its success is based on her collection of handpicked recipes. As well as all of the freshly baked breads, there's also a strong following for the mouth watering pies, cakes and pastries. And for those seeking some food for thought with their daily bread, there's also an art gallery.
Travellers continuing on the road between Malmsbury and Daylesford will find Mingela Homestead, a spectacular farmhouse retreat on a thousand acre working farm. Inside there's a well-designed layout with separate areas for living and sleeping. Up to 12 people can sleep across the five flexible bedrooms, and there's ample accommodation for children.

Kerferd Cottage and Itali.Co
Located on a leafy residential street in Elwood, about 10 kilometres from the city, Kerferd Cottage is a luxuriously appointed single level Edwardian home with spacious interiors and a delightful garden. This two bedroom self-contained cottage has everything you need to make your home away from home including a modern kitchen and living area, a comfy lounge with gas flamed open fire and a large bathroom that comes equipped with heated towel rails.
Cosmopolitan St Kilda is just five minutes away and Barkly Street is always a happening hotspot. One of the newest places to eat around here is Itali.co. The name Itali.co is a combination of the beauty, people and culture of all things Italian. As with their sister restaurant in Sorrento, the menu features innovative expressions of traditional flavours, so they're making good use of the rotating wood fired oven, which is one of the first of its kind in Melbourne.

Once you've grabbed a bite to eat, you'll be ready to hit the road again and enjoy your journey along the spectacular coastline. If you really want to feel the magic of the Great Ocean Road it's worth finding a place to stay for a couple of days and just past Lorne in Wye River you'll find Sapphire. If you want the best, then this could be the one for you.
