Episode 13: Mother's Day
This week on Postcards, the team celebrate Mother's Day by venturing to a handful of destinations in and around Melbourne that every Mum is bound to love. Brodie travels to Dromana and takes a tour of Heronswood, Lauren checks out the Hollywood Costume exhibition at ACMI in Federation Square as well as stopping by the Sofitel on Collins Street for afternoon tea. Glen treks to the Yarra Valley and discovers stylish and affordable accommodation at Mt Rael, and also stops by Piaf Day Spa, and Rebecca seeks out three of the most popular cafes tucked away amongst the suburbs – Crabapple Kitchen, Snow Pony and Little Henri.
Heronswood is a breathtaking property located in Dromana, just over an hour's drive from Melbourne. Designed in 1866, the house was built from granite blocks quarried from Arthurs Seat and its architecture is best described as 'Neo-Gothic'. Heronswood is also the home of 'The Diggers Club' who are the expert green thumbs that look after the two hectares of gardens which are made up of mature trees dating back to the 1800s, as well as an enviable exhibition of edible goodies from the ground. Everyone is able to enjoy the freshly grown herbs and vegetables at the onsite restaurant 'Fork to Fork'. Sit outside in fragrant surrounds or bunker down in the beautiful thatched-roof building and tuck into dishes like spiced pumpkin soup with kaffir lime, calamari salad with roasted peppers, onions and chickpeas or perhaps a Heronswood Platter – roasted vegetables tossed together with some olive oil and topped with home-made basil pesto and local goat's cheese.

Hollywood Costumes Exhibition and Sofitel High Tea
A slice of Hollywood has come to town with some of the most iconic costumes worn on the silver screen on show at the dazzling exhibition Hollywood Costume currently displayed at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Direct from London's famous Victoria and Albert Museum, Hollywood Costume features over 100 famous costumes from a century of filmmaking, including 19 Academy Award winning designs from the Golden Age of cinema, through to today. Some of the more noteworthy pieces include that little black dress made famous by Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's', the white halter dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in 'Some Like it Hot' and a gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor in her acclaimed role as the Egyptian Queen in 'Cleopatra'.
Once you've whet your appetite for Hollywood Glamour, why not stroll a couple of blocks to the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins Street and indulge in some Hollywood inspired drinks at the Atrium bar. Situated on level 35 of the hotel, you can take in the magnificent city views in a stylish setting all the while enjoying your cheeky cocktail. Or if it is afternoon tea that you're after, be sure to stop by Sofi's Lounge where you can enjoy delicate fingers sandwiches, a selection of sweet temptations and even a glass of sparkling every day from 2.30pm.

Suburban Cafes – Crabapple Kitchen, Snow Pony and Little Henri
A must-try café in the Hawthorn area is Crabapple Kitchen, which stands out among the bustle of Glenferrie Road with its cute white picket fence and colourful striped awning. Inside there's a homely feel with photos on the walls and a bar that's styled as a household kitchen complete with cookbooks and a retro looking French stove. On the food front, the most popular item on the menu is the buttermilk pancakes, but the blue swimmer crab slider is also a crowd favourite.
Another inner city café that continues to please the masses is Snow Pony, which takes its urban cool vibe seriously with beautiful old leather banquettes, industrial communal tables and pendant lighting. Combine this with the excellent Allpress coffee and delicious food such as smashed avocado with thyme buttered mushrooms or the totally over the top toasted banana bread, and you'll be trekking back to Balwyn for more.
On the other side of the Yarra you'll find Little Henri, a new café in High Street, Thornbury, housed in an old bank. The dark wooden chairs and tables are comfy, the decorations are stylish and there's even a courtyard that's perfect for lazing in. The high quality of the food makes it almost impossible to resist dishes such as baked beans with haloumi cheese, and scrumptious zucchini fritters served with house smoked salmon, avocado and horseradish cream.
