Episode 19: Cooks with books
This week on Postcards the team meet a handful of well-known and respected chefs, each with a book to their name! Rebecca travels to Mildura to meet Stefano De Pieri at his restaurant 'Stefano's' and learns about his latest book 'Nuovo Mondo – New Italian Food'. Glen stops by Albert St Food & Wine in Brunswick to meet dessert queen Philippa Sibley, and to hear about the book she is working on – 'New Classics'. Lauren goes on a produce shopping spree with Gabriel Gate at the Camberwell Fresh Food Market, before they retreat back to his home and cook up a storm whilst chatting about two of his books – 'A Cook's Tour of France' and 'A Taste of France'. Finally, Shane takes a road trip to Yandoit and is given a tour of Rosa Mitchell's rustic property, which happens to be the inspiration for her book 'Rosa's Farm: Country Cooking'. They then venture back to the CBD to 'Rosa's Kitchen' in Punch Lane to whip up a wild weeds pie made from produce straight from the vegie patch.
Stefano's in Mildura and the book 'Nuovo Mondo' by Stefano De Pieri and Jim McDougall
If there's one thing you have to do when you go to Mildura it's dine at 'Stefano's'. Stefano De Pieri has put Mildura on the map as a foodie haven through this very restaurant at Mildura's Grand Hotel. The menu at Stefano's Restaurant changes daily and is dependent on what's available locally and seasonally. A six or eight course degustation menu is on offer five nights a week with an express lunch available on Fridays and Saturdays. Stefano has also been busy writing his latest book 'Nuovo Mondo – New Italian Food' with his head chef Jim McDougall. The book is full of recipes that marry traditional Italian cookery with a modern approach to food. It also offers a basic guide to curing meats, making classic sauces and traditional stocks.

Albert St Food & Wine and Philippa Sibley's upcoming book 'New Classics'
'Albert St Food & Wine' is situated in an old bank building on the corner of Sydney Road and Albert Street in Brunswick, just a few kilometres out of Melbourne's CBD. This relative newcomer to the city's ever growing dining scene is where you'll find dessert queen Philippa Sibley. The wine bar, restaurant and produce store has a Mediterranean influence with a focus on seasonal, sustainable ingredients from local producers. There are plenty of goodies to take home if you're just passing through, but if you're after a sit down meal, the menu has endless options to suit any palate. The only way to finish any visit to Albert Street Food & Wine is of course with one of Philippa's beautiful desserts, such as her Poire 'Iggy Popcorn' which combines pear, salted caramel, popcorn, vanilla ice-cream and chocolate. And be sure to check out her new book 'New Classics' when it comes out later this year.

Camberwell Market and Gabriel Gate's books 'A Cook's Tour of France' and 'A Taste of France'
French chef and cookbook author Gabriel Gate gets many of his cooking ideas whilst travelling through France, but when in Melbourne, he turns to the Camberwell Fresh Food Market for inspiration. The market is full to the brim with pristine produce, the finest fish, perfectly butchered meats and delectable deli bites. Be sure to stop by Golden Gardenia Fruit and Vegetables, where you'll find seasonal ingredients, as well as Golden Rooster, a stall specialising in fresh poultry and poultry goods. The Camberwell Fresh Food Market trades on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7am. Gabriel Gate's new books, 'A Cook's Tour of France' and 'A Taste of France' are both published by Hardie Grant Books, so be sure to look out for them at your local bookstore.

Rosa's Kitchen and Rosa Mitchell's book 'Rosa's Farm'
Melbourne cook Rosa Mitchell was inspired by the rustic rural property she inherited to write her book entitled 'Rosa's Farm: Country Cooking'. The farm is in Yandoit which is 90 minutes from Melbourne, and Rosa and her husband are currently bringing it back to life. Their project involves rescuing the old buildings and resurrecting the ancient vegie garden. In addition to working on the farm, Rosa also runs 'Rosa's Kitchen' which is her restaurant on Punch Lane in Melbourne's CBD. Rosa is known for her home style Italian cooking, and her bountiful antipasto plates are a huge draw-card. The menu changes regularly but always features fresh pastas, and the ever popular handmade cannoli for dessert.
