Episode 29: Father's Day

This week on Postcards, the team scatter themselves across the state in search of the latest Victorian hot spots, venturing to Prahran, Daylesford and Werribee. Shane Crawford remains close to home and checks out the freshly renovated Prahran Hotel, George Calombaris' new venture 'Gazi' and the Italian eating house, Zucca Rossa. Lauren Phillips visits gorgeous Daylesford where she takes a look at the reinvigorated Daylesford Hotel and a charming B&B housed within a century-old barn. Finally, Rebecca Judd visits the beautiful Mansion Hotel and Spa at Werribee Park where she is shown the heritage style accommodation on offer, before being treated to modern Australian cuisine at Joseph's restaurant, a beauty treatment at the onsite spa and a guided tour of the historic mansion.

Prahran Hotel, Gazi and Zucca Rossa
The Prahran Hotel has been given a makeover and the glam new look is proving very popular with both locals and those further afield. The hotel now has a large indoor/outdoor garden, a five metre long front bar and 17 concrete pipes that function as booths. There is a traditional dining room or you can eat at one of the big window booths that seat eight. There are also smaller booths for two and then there's the Half Pipe, for those who like to see and be seen. You'll find good, honest pub grub like salads, steaks and schnitzels, and there is even a $13 steak and parma special on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

If souvlaki is more your style then get yourself to Gazi, where you can feast on some great Greek street food. Gazi is the reinvention of TV chef George Calombaris' Press Club restaurant and its stripped back warehouse vibe and ceiling hung with hundreds of upturned terracotta pots transports you straight into an alley in Athens. The souvlakis come filled with spit roasted chicken, beef brisket, soft shell crab and duck. Team them up with some delectable dips and salads and you've got yourself a Greek feast fit for the gods.

If you love all things Italian, then Zucca Rossa is sure to satisfy. This little gem down Greville Street in Prahran is a modern Italian eating house and bar with a slick rock star fit out, featuring studded leather chairs and tables set with bling. The bar is top notch, the bar snacks are delicious and the full dining experience also hits the mark. Be sure to try the delicious roasted veal, the barramundi fillet with crab meat, or tuck into a share plate of pasta served traditionally to feed four people.

Daylesford Hotel and The Barn
If you're heading to Central Victoria then be sure to stop by the freshly renovated Daylesford Hotel. It's one of the town's most iconic buildings and is only about 90 minutes from Melbourne. Turning 100 this year, this old gem's had a bit of a nip and tuck, and you could be forgiven for thinking nothing has been done at all because everything from the classic curved bar to the pressed tin ceilings looks like it's been there forever. From the front bar to the lounge, and out to the beer garden, the Daylesford Hotel is full of cosy corners and sensational spaces calling you to come along and settle in. The old drive through is still going strong but the Bottle O has been banished in favour of a new Wine Store. There's a menu full of comfort food and country pub classics that you can enjoy in the bar, the beautifully renovated dining room or upstairs on the veranda with a knee warming nanna rug.

In terms of accommodation in Daylesford, you can't go past The Barn, a VIP Bed and Breakfast that is housed in an enormous century old barn right behind the famous Cliffy's Emporium on Raglan Street. It is the perfect place to treat friends to long lunches and delicious dinners, as the kitchen has been fitted with a big red gas-fired AGA slow combustion stove and restaurant sized bench tops. There's even a French style veggie garden if you feel like a bit of a forage. The Barn is floor heated throughout and two couples can comfortably stay in its two queen bedrooms and relax in the two lovely lounge areas.
