6 - 22 Apr 2017

Metropolis Gallery in association with the art estate of Ludmilla Meilerts is excited to make available paintings of the urban and industrial side of Melbourne between the 1950s and 1970s.

After arriving in post-war Melbourne in 1948, Meilerts (1908-1997) immediately turned her focus inwards to the pulsing heart and the waterways of mid-century Melbourne, her new home.

The colour and vitality of her paintings took Melbourne by surprise. The NGV soon purchased one of her paintings and within two years had acquired another. Many public galleries and important private collections followed suit and this prolific new artist with a European style and sensibility forged on to make Melbourne's back streets and docklands an important part of her life's work.
