Buchan Caves

Discover an underground wonderland of spectacular limestone formations at Gippsland's ancient Buchan Caves. The caves were created almost 400 million years ago by underground rivers cutting through limestone rock.

Cave tours
Professionally guided tours of either Royal Cave or Fairy Cave operate daily (except on Christmas Day). Both caves are lit and have walkways. Royal Cave has calcite-rimmed pools, and in Fairy Cave you will see elaborate stalactites and stalagmites. Tours to 'wild' unlit caves can also be arranged for small groups. The caves are a constant 17 degrees Celsius making the tour a comfortable temperature all year round.

Camping and bushwalking
Buchan Caves Reserve is a unique getaway adjoining the stunning caves system. Access to short and long walks in the surrounding bushland and the nearby Snowy River National Park make it an ideal base for a nature based camping holiday. Native wildlife abounds with many kangaroos, wallabies and wombats, and the region is home to over 60 species of birds.

Wilderness retreats
With scenic picnic spots, a stream-feed pool and hundreds of shady trees, the Reserve is the perfect place to pitch a tent on one of 100 grassy campsites. Self-contained cabins are also available. For something a little more unique, the Buchan Caves Reserve offers Wilderness Retreats. These safari-style tents allow visitors to immerse themselves in natural surroundings without sacrificing their creature comforts.
