Four-wheel driving

Gippsland is a popular four-wheel driving destination with many challenging unsealed roads and tracks throughout its forests, fern gullies and mountain ranges. The Alpine National Park and surrounding high country are great for spectacular scenery and challenging terrain, as is Mt Baw Baw National Park near Walhalla. The legendary Wonnangatta Station tour and the Dargo/Grant diggings are famous Victorian four-wheel driving tours.

Alpine tracks
The Alpine National Park protects the state's highest mountains and pristine alpine environments. Some of the tracks are for experienced four-wheel drivers only, but there are many other tracks where you can get away, enjoy beautiful views and appreciate the quiet wonder of the alps.

Parks and forests
East Gippsland has some wonderful national parks and forests to explore by 4WD. Croajingolong National Park features forested foothills and a stunning coastline. Several tracks lead to remote locations while others offer touring routes through the park and adjoining forest. The famous Deddick Trail through the Snowy River National Park is for experienced four-wheel drivers with steep terrain and magnificent views across the Snowy valleys. Easier tracks within the park lead to waterfalls and the Snowy River itself.

Road closures
Many roads and tracks in parks and forests in Gippsland are closed to the public during the wetter months of the year (usually between June and November). Contact Parks Victoria or a local four-wheel drive club to find out track closures and conditions. For maximum safety and fun, hire an experienced guide to take you through some of the more remote and less frequently travelled tracks.
