Open Garden at Illabunda near Venus Bay

0472 997 880

21 - 22 Oct 2017

Come and visit this large coastal property that clearly reflects the owners’ love of the whole environment in which it sits. The garden is not ‘manicured’ or ‘designed’ as it has been carefully developed to enhance the natural qualities of the site, emphasise the significant old trees and create a garden with a distinctive Australian, coastal feel.

The long driveway to the garden winds through Banksia integrifolia bushland towards Anderson Inlet. Closer to the house, grassy areas open up around huge, sculptural eucalypts which are underplanted with a range of Australian plants: thomasias, correas, stylidiums, grevilleas, acacias (including two leprosa ‘Scarlet Blaze’), and many smaller banksias.

There are groves of young casuarina and ‘moonah’ and a large fenced productive area with raised beds. Planting extends into the inlet walk at the rear of the property, as the owners seek to reinstate the indigenous species wherever possible.

Note: The garden is accessed via a 300 metre path from where cars are parked. There is very limited access for those with mobility difficulties.
