Beach fishing

Gippsland has over 500 kilometres of coastline offering extensive fishing opportunities. Picking a good spot requires some trial and practice and the below are some well-known 'hot spots'.

Corinella and Western Port
Head out from Corinella to fish Western Port for flathead, snapper, gummy sharks, mullet and more.

Wonthaggi, Kilcunda and surrounds
There are many popular surf fishing locations near Wonthaggi including Kilcunda and Baxter's Beach.

Inverloch and surrounds
Try for King George whiting, Australian salmon, mullet and silver trevally from sheltered beaches.

Venus Bay
Wet a line for flathead, salmon, tailor, whiting and trevally at Andersons Inlet and Venus Bay.

Port Welshpool
From the shores of this coastal village you can find the popular flathead, snapper or gummy sharks.

Ninety Mile Beach, Woodside Beach, Seaspray, Golden Beach
Ninety Mile Beach and surrounds are popular at night during winter when fishing is at its best.

Corinella and Western Port

<p>Launch your boat from Corinella for fishing in the Western Port region. The most common fish caught in the bay are flathead, whiting, snapper, silver bay trout, trevally, gummy sharks and mullet. </p>

Wonthaggi, Kilcunda and surrounds

<p>There are many popular surf fishing locations near Wonthaggi including Kilcunda and Baxter's Beach. Look out for Australian salmon and mullet during the season in the surf.</p>

Inverloch and surrounds

<p>Inverloch is located on Anderson Inlet and great beach fishing is available. Try for King George whiting, Australian salmon, mullet and silver trevally from one of the many sheltered beaches. Boating on the inlet is also a great way to access some good fishing spots. The nearby Tarwin River is a great spot to catch bream with its accessible fishing platforms. </p>

Venus Bay

<p>Wet a line for flathead, salmon, tailor, whiting and trevally at Anderson Inlet and Venus Bay&nbsp;&minus; great for families and surf anglers.</p>

Port Welshpool

<p>From the shores of this coastal village you can find the popular flathead, or try your surf rig on snapper and gummy sharks. Port Welshpool gives you access to whole of the Corner Inlet by boat. Make sure you don't fish in the protected zone. </p>

Ninety Mile Beach, Woodside Beach, Seaspray, Golden Beach

<p>Ninety Mile Beach and surrounds are popular at night during winter when fishing is at its best, but also great on warm days with your feet in the surf. You can lure fish and bait fish. Try a basic surf rig with a little berley to bring the fish during a rising tide. </p>

Port Albert

<p>This port provides access not only to Bass Strait but to 220 square kilometres of sheltered estuaries. As a launching place for large boats capable of handling the Bass Strait weather, Port Albert is ideally located. Offshore targets include yellowtail kingfish when they are running.
