Pro Hart is one of Australia’s most iconic artists.Kevin Charles ‘Pro’ Hart (1928 - 2006), destined to become one of Australia’s most famous, identifiable, prolific and also controversial artists. Recognised for producing work straight from the heart, on the subjects he knew best. Pro Hart was born in Broken Hill and spent his early years in Larloona, a sheep station around 130 kilometres from Broken Hill, learning by correspondence. An original oil of Larloona is included in this exhibition. After leaving school at 15, he did numerous menial jobs in the region, and in his 20’s did underground shifts in Mines in Broken Hill. His key to success can be seen with total clarity in this exhibition of his artworks – the tremendous ease of the line in his etchings and aquatints, the freshness of the colours, the at times humorous authenticity of the subjects, and the unpretentiousness of his characters all contribute to giving his works tremendous appeal. Unlike some artists who produce works from the imagination, when looking at Pro Hart’s work you have the immediate sense that this artist was looking at his subject in person, knowing it and understanding it.
