Great Western

Rally the troops and plan out an indulgent tour taking in the Great Western's famous wineries. Just make sure you're not the designated driver.

Located in the middle of the Western Highway between Melbourne and Adelaide, the Great Western was first settled by sheep graziers in the 1840s. This was before the township grew following the discovery of gold and later the planting of the now famous grape vines.

Heaven in a barrel
Visit the pioneering wineries that have earned the Great Western region its name for producing Australia's best wine. Tour Best's incredible hand-dug cellar built in the 1860s and admire the original barrels. Head underground at Seppelt's as you explore the labyrinthine tunnels or 'drives' housing maturing sparkling wine.

Pick of the pack
Share a bottle of Grampians Estate's famous sparkling shiraz and bring your appetite to local cellar doors to sample meals made from the freshest local produce. Work off the lunch and stretch your legs at the Great Western village on a slow walk through the historic local churches and buildings.

Country racing
Check the calendar and pencil in a visit for the annual rodeo and horse racing enthusiasts will want to hurry into to town on the Australia Day weekend for the Great Western Cup. Hosted by the Wimmera Racing Club, it is one of the region's most popular racing events.
