Great Western

Get the gang together and plan out your food and wine tour taking in Great Western's famous wineries. Just make sure you're not the designated driver. Located in the middle of the Western Highway between Melbourne and Adelaide, Great Western was first settled by sheep graziers in the 1840s. This was before the township grew following the discovery of gold and later the planting of the now famous grape vines.

Heaven in a barrel

Visit the pioneering wineries that have earned the Great Western region its name for producing some of Australia's finest wine. Sample varietals in Best's red gum tasting room and take a tour of the incredible hand-dug cellar, built back in the 1860s. Next stop is Seppelt's, where you can head underground and explore the three kilometres of labyrinthine tunnels or 'drives', which house the maturing sparkling wine.

Share a bottle of Grampians Estate's famous sparkling shiraz and bring your appetite to local cellar doors to sample meals made from the freshest local produce. Work off the lunch and stretch your legs at the Great Western village on a slow walk through the historic local churches and buildings.

Country racing

Check the calendar and pencil in a visit for the annual rodeo and horse racing enthusiasts will want to hurry into to town on the Australia Day weekend for the Great Western Cup. Hosted by the Wimmera Racing Club, it is one of the region's most popular racing events.
