From Geelong to Warrnambool, the history of the Great Ocean Road is alive with tales of terrible shipwrecks, colonial struggles and maritime mysteries. Learn about the region's colourful heritage at lighthouses and museums across the region. Visit the Flagstaff Maritime Village along the famous shipwreck coast, look out over the raging Southern Ocean from the Cape Otway Lightstation, and take a tour of the South Channel Fort in Port Phillip Bay.
The best way to see the region's abundant marine life is to get out on the water. Join a tour and see dolphins at play, seals lazing about on the coast and local birdlife up close. Come between June and October and watch out along the coast for southern right whales and blue whales. For a bird's eye of view of the mighty Otway National Park, make the trip through temperate rainforest and climb the steps of the Otway Fly.
