Vacation - Travels here, there and everywhere - A community remembers

03 5721 3095

Wangaratta Visitor information Centre is to be the home of this historic exhibition looking at the Vacation and the way its evolved over the years.

Showcase Wangaratta inc. is developing an exciting new community project in 2017 that will collect stories, memories from photographs, movie film and slides of how the community have spent their holidays over the last 100 years.

Film-maker Adrian Vaughan is creating a short film of some of these stories while others will become part of an exhibition in Wangaratta in October and also be captured in story books that can be shared in the community.

The idea of an extended three week annual work holiday only became part of our work practice from 1966. Prior to this holidays were of a shorter period of time around Christmas, Easter, Labour Day and long weekends.

For some the three week Christmas break at the Mills meant they might finish building their homes, help family members on their farms or visit friends overseas.

Farming families often did not leave their farms during the summer months but timed a short break to fit in with the calving or lambing schedules.
