Take your time to explore the beautifully restored town of Beechworth and venture into the surrounding wine region, which lies at the foothills of the Victorian Alps.

Cellar bound
Some of Australia's best chardonnay is grown in Beechworth by boutique growers – the most acclaimed being Giaconda, but the region also produces renowned pinot noir and other cool-climate varietals. Visit cellar doors and sample the best of the region with stunning backdrops and views out to Mt Buffalo.

Dining out
Follow up a day at the cellar doors with dinner at one of Beechworth's abundance of city-quality eateries. Book ahead for a degustation dinner at Provenance, sample local varietals at the rustic Indigo Vineyard, or linger over lunch at the Green Shed Bistro and Gigi's of Beechworth.

A long history
These days the historic wine region's small vineyards produce excellent wines, though the wine industry suffered major setbacks since the first vines were planted in 1856 and the first wine shop was opened ten years later. By the end of the World War I all vines had gone, victim to both the economic times and phylloxera.
