Discover why the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail is one of the best in Australia. The 107 kilometres of bitumen sealed track is well suited to both cycling and walking. The trail follows a gentle gradient that makes it suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, and is a must do for all visitors to the region.
The trail is an ideal introduction into the diverse countryside of the North East Victorian alps and valleys. It will lead you deep into pine forests and natural bushland then out in the open through valleys nestled amongst some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Australia.
The trail links the townships of Wangaratta, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Porepunkah and Bright, Rutherglen to Wahgunyah and most recently Wangaratta to Milawa, all offering their own unique character and style at pleasant intervals along the trail.
As you travel the trail, sample the region's food and wine at tantalising wineries and eateries, absorb living history as you pass by old tobacco kilns and witness the prosperity of the gold rush era, or the haunting legend of Ned Kelly.
Take your time to explore friendly country towns and villages along the trail all while taking in the changing landscape and soothing sounds of country life.
Your journey can begin at Bright, Myrtleford, Beechworth, Wangaratta, Wahgunyah, Wandiligong or from many old station sites. Bicycle hire is available at all of these towns.
