Mobile food trucks
There's almost as much thrill in the hunt for Melbourne's increasing number of food trucks as there is in the simple yet sophisticated food being flung out of van windows on footpaths and in parks in the inner city.
It was inevitable that a city as obsessed with eating and drinking as Melbourne would be in the sights of the army of food trucks that are conquering cities around the world. Early forays by Beatbox Kitchen and Taco Truck paved the way for an urban street food revolution, which is often as much about the social experience as it is about the innovative food being served.
Beatbox Kitchen and Taco Truck comprise the food truck old guard, but there's nothing old about tucking into satisfying burgers and fresh tacos in an inner city park. Gumbo Kitchen will feed your hunger for New Orleans-style Cajun food, while White Guy Cooks Thai has a simple menu of fresh, spicy Thai food. The Banh Mi Boys deal in crammed bread rolls and chargrill on the go, and Soul Kitchen Woodfired Pizza Truck brings the food truck edge to St Kilda Road. Burgers, chips and drinks are all you'll get from Mr Burger, but you won't ask for anything more. Fancy Hank's appearances are further between, and the succulent slow-smoked meats are more cherished for being so.
The trucks generally settle on regular patches of turf, mostly in the inner north (Northcote, Carlton, Brunswick, Fitzroy, North Melbourne) as well as the Docklands and the CBD and some spots in the inner east (Collingwood, Abbotsford, Richmond). Trucks come and go to certain sites in Prahran and St Kilda. Don't leave the locations to chance – keep an eye on the trucks' Facebook and Twitter pages, or via the handy Where the Truck At app.
Weekends are when you're most likely to find a feed on the run, with the bulk of the mobile food trucks hitting the roads on Saturdays and Sundays to satisfy your craving.

Follow that truck! Track down Melbourne's roaming purveyor of fine soft tortillas and dig into meat, fish or vego tacos with a big old pile of guac.
Sport the smell of campfire like a badge of honour to identify you and yours as those who have stood around Fancy Hank's portable Monster 'Bar-B-Que'.
