Couture

If you're the type who prefers to buy clothes 'by appointment' only, here are three couturiers whose phone numbers you'll want on speed dial. For all others, these are the names you want to keep in mind if that special occasion ever arises. And we all know it will.

Yeojin Bae
After graduating from the Whitehouse School of Fashion, Yeojin Bae worked with Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui in New York and, once back in Australia, at Saba. She established her eponymous line of feminine frocks in 2006 and received the Tiffany & Co Young Designer of the Year Award only one year later. Her theme-driven collections are comprised of garments that she herself would like to wear floaty silhouettes cut from silk and jersey with just a hint of vintage detailing.

J'Aton
J'Aton was created in 1995 by Jacob Luppino and Anthony Pittorino, who met at the Melbourne College of Textiles. The duo adheres to the principles of 19th century French haute couture; however, their lavish creations are also highly experimental. A bevy of A-listers have donned J'Aton's couture for red-carpet affairs. One of their most glamorous commissions was a gown called 'Poetic Justice' for burlesque glamour girl Dita von Teese, which had 'words of passion and messages of love' sewn into the 200 metres of cherry pink silk.

Gwendolynne
Not far from the bustle of Brunswick Street, this by appointment-only store invites dedicated fashion fiends to enter the exquisite, romantic world of Gwendolynne Burkin, one of Melbourne's most cherished designers and seamstresses. Her feminine creations combine deco-inspired detail with cool, modern cuts and sombre, old-world hues. The result are ethereal gowns that are the envy of every bride around the country. Her work has been exhibited in the Powerhouse Museum, featured in campaigns for Nokia and Sony, and she has created pieces for The Australian Ballet.
