Shopping strips

Who says the high street is dead? The trend toward urban super-size malls has been bucked in Melbourne, where discerning locals are still very much in love with their small, vibrant shopping strips, alive with a colourful and diverse range of traders.

Independent designers, shoe shops and dressmakers stand shoulder to shoulder with milliners and local jewellery-makers. Art galleries, record shops, health and eco stores, all share the sidewalk with gift shops, trendy hairdressers, homewares, fishmongers, funky florists and fruiterers, patissiers and artisan bakers. You'll find burger joints, bric-a-brac and boutiques lined up with cafes, restaurants, bars and wine merchants.

Shops come in all shapes and sizes, all standing in a row. Many are still housed in the same Victorian-era terraces, art deco milk bars and 1950s shop fronts that have always been home to local business.

Take a trip down memory lane with one of these favourite independent shopping strips.
