ACMI is proud to present the workings of entrepreneurial film makers Himansu Rai and Devinka Rani, two pioneers of Indian film studio, Bombay Talkies. The transition of development from silent film to sound represents a cohesive and comprehensive collection of 1920’s to 1940’s film studio, playing a crucial role in the development of mainstream Bombay cinema.

Bombay Talkies ran for over 20 years releasing over 40 films, becoming one of India’s most innovative, influential and highly resourced movie studios. It is credited with introducing musical narrative structure that characterises modern Bollywood, and launched many careers of the most prominent Indian film industry luminaries.
