Benjamin Northey Conducts Sibelius 2

03 9929 9600

11 - 12 May 2017

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, together with MSO Associate Conductor, Benjamin Northey kick this concert off with the Coriolan Overture – a Shakespeare-inspired play by Austrian dramatist, Heinrich von Collin, which tells the story of the rebellious Roman general, Coriolanus and some pesky Roman plebeians. The Overture now receives regular rapturous applause from across the globe.

Melbourne’s very own Stefan Cassomenos then takes to the stage with Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto No.5. Known for its grand, bold ideas and heroic spirit, the Concerto, dedicated to Archduke Rudolf of Austria epitomizes the work of a man straddling the divide between Classical and Romantic eras.

To round out the concert, experience Sibelius’ adventurous Symphony No.2 – an unconventional yet bold work, once described by the composer as a ‘confession of the soul’.
