True West is a modern American masterpiece by Pulitzer Prize winning writer Sam Shepard. The story opens on Austin, a screenwriter trying to gain success in Hollywood, who has been charged with house sitting for his mother whilst she is in Alaska. Tensions rise when his elder brother Lee, a wander who extorts and threatens his way through existence, arrives at the door after a five year hiatus. Their fierce competitiveness and desire to dominate the other drives them into an alcohol-fueled descent into the pressures of an entrenched psychological struggle with identity and family dynamics. Shepard's work is very autobiographical and is shadowed with the complex relationship to his parents and to himself. True West is the inaugural production for new Melbourne not-for-profit theatre company, Matchstick Theatre. The company is dedicated to bringing independent theatre of the highest calibre to audiences in Melbourne, promising them high production values and meticulous dedication to the collaborative craft of live performance.
