Our major sports stadiums sport major line-ups year round: Melbourne Park's Margaret Court Arena and Rod Laver Arena, AAMI Park, and even footy grounds Etihad Stadium and the MCG.

Jump around at stalwart music venue Festival Hall and keep an ear out for folk, country and indie acts at St Kilda's historic Palais Theatre.

For outdoor and all ages gigs and summer festivals, it's all beats and bats at iconic amphitheatre the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, smack bang in the Royal Botanic Gardens.

To catch big names in smaller venues, watch for local and international touring acts on the bill at dedicated pub band rooms the Northcote Social Club and the Corner, and ever-evolving CBD venue 170 Russell.

Local pubs and bars around town have plenty of acts on most nights of the week, too, so you can easily chalk up a list of bands you saw before they were famous.

Tickets

Plan ahead: touring acts often sell out quickly, with pre-sale tickets taking up a fair share. Keep an eye on tour and ticket release dates, and sign up with the major ticketing outlets to keep your finger on the pre-sale pulse. beat.com.au has a comprehensive weekly gig guide covering almost every venue in town.
