When Swedish retail behemoth H&M was looking to establish its first Australian outpost it looked no further than Melbourne's GPO, the 1864 postal building stunningly refurbished and converted into a sophisticated and contemporary retail space. Dominating the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth streets, this heritage-listed New-Renaissance style building is an oasis in the bustling Bourke Street Mall. Originally a postal hall and re-jigged by famous architect Walter Burley Griffin in 1919, today the sunny steps and colonnades wrap around two entire floors dedicated to H&M's full range of fashion, cosmetics and homewares. Break up a shopping spree with refreshments from the cafes and eateries dotted around the exterior of this Melbourne landmark.
