Retracing the steps of Marcus Clarke, a young Barry Humphries, Germaine Greer and Vali Myers, you will encounter the studio of impressionist painter Tom Roberts, Mikra Mora’s chic café, the white-brick apartment of modernist artists Albert Tucker and Joy Hester, and scenes in Melbourne counter-cultural music history. The character of the area has changed but scenes are still played out and stand as testament to an older, secret- a bohemian world.

Start at the State Library Victoria and take a journey in the footsteps of wayward author and Melbourne ‘s first bohemian, Marcus Clarke, walking the wild side of the city’s underground, travelling through bohemia past and present, from the dandies, goths and decadents of the nineteenth century to the hippies, hip hop artists and hipsters of recent decades.
