Let the kids splash around in the shallows at Phillip Island's sheltered bay beaches, or catch a wave at one of the excellent surf beaches.
North for swimming
Plan a family day on the sheltered coves on the north shores of Phillip Island, where the waters are calm. The kids will have a ball with the other families at the popular beach on the Esplanade at Cowes. If you're not a strong swimmer, these beaches are perfect for splashing about.
South for surf
Catch a wave at one of the excellent surf beaches on the island's ocean (south) side. Challenge yourself with the rips and currents at the iconic Woolamai surf beach, or surf, boogie board and body surf at Smiths Beach, a surf beach located on a bay and suited to families. Both beaches are patrolled in summer.
Note: Surf beaches on the south of the island can be very dangerous at times. Beware of rips and do not swim alone. Woolamai Surf Beach, Smiths Beach and Cowes Beach are patrolled during the summer school holidays. Look out for lifesaver patrol areas.
