Nature & wildlife

From little penguins, seals and migrating whales to pristine surf beaches, rugged coastal cliffs and mangroves, Phillip Island is a natural wonderland ripe for adventure. See the iconic penguins waddling across Summerland Beach at sunset, observe koalas at close range from treetop boardwalks, and greet migratory mutton-birds in wetlands teeming with life.

Waddle on by

The daily parade of little penguins draws visitors from around the globe. Up early and off to swim more than 100 kilometres a day, these little guys arrive home from work at dusk, treating visitors to a viewing of rare quality.

Stroll along the boardwalks at The Nobbies headland, among natural sea bird gardens, and wait for the thrill of thunderous blowholes, or sign up for a seal cruise from Cowes to get up close to some of the 25,000 strong colony of fur seals. Head inland for a close encounter of the koala kind or take in a sunset at the picturesque Rhyll Inlet amongst flocks of migratory mutton birds.

Coast to coast

Get the sand between your toes and explore the wild beaches and rock formations of the Bass Strait coastline. Find a sheltered bay along the northern side of the island and set up the stumps for some beach cricket. Alternatively, ignite the surfer within and rip into the perfect peaks of Cape Woolamai or Cat Bay.

Keep one eye out to sea during May and October for the opportunity to witness humpback whales, southern right whales and orcas as they make the journey from Antarctica to Queensland's warm waters for calving.
