Local produce

Be prepared to be spoilt for choice in the Murray region. Whatever your weakness, the unique characteristics of the area ensure you'll find an endless supply of fruit and vegetables and excellent fresh water fish.

Victoria's food bowl
Indulge in a huge range of fruit, especially citrus fruit and grapes, vegetables, olives and nuts at roadside stalls, farmers' markets or local cafes. An enviable combination of rich soils, a sunny Mediterranean climate, and Murray River water for irrigation keeps production, and the quality of local produce, high.

River delicacies
Take advantage of a plethora of seasonal fresh water fish, including the famed Murray cod, courtesy of the Murray River. Sample fresh local produce cooked up in inventive ways at restaurants and cafes throughout the region.

Top towns for local produce
Linger in Mildura for slow food and quality produce. Stefano's food store, 27 Deakin, is a good starting point where you can order a picnic hamper filled with the best regional produce. Head south to Swan Hill, the centre of Australia's stone fruit industry. Look out for farm gates signs along the Murray Valley Highway to buy nectarines, peaches, pistachios, almonds and olives.

Get a farm gate trail brochure from the local Visitor Information Centre and stop off at a roadside stall around Yarrawonga-Mulwala for stone fruits, berries, nuts and honey. Alternatively, visit a factory outlet in Shepparton and stock up on fruit picked from their abundant orchards.
