Canoeing, kayaking & rafting
For fast-paced white water action, head to the Murray Gates section of the Upper Murray near Corryong to tackle level five rapids with one of the local adventure operators. For a longer trip, pack gear into kayaks for an overnight camping stay.
For the beginner
If you prefer something gentler, the lower Murray River offers excellent flat water canoeing experiences with no rapids or white water. Hire a canoe from a local operator and explore the river, paddling calm waters beneath red gums and stopping at shady riverside clearings for a picnic in the bush or a spot of fishing.
Flooded forests and billabongs
Head to the Barmah Forest near Echuca-Moama to get back to nature. Paddle a canoe through calm waters and listen to the sounds of birds and frogs. A year-round activity, canoeing in the Barmah Forest is particularly memorable in spring when the forest is flooded and you can weave your way through the trees.
Discover the hidden beauty of Lake Mulwala on a guided kayak tour or explore the Gunbower Creek near Koondrook just west of Echuca. Follow the recreational canoe trail located on the Gunbower Island, approximately 6 kilometers from Koondrook. Towards Mildura the wide expanse of the Murray River with its inlets, Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and Kings Billabong also offer excellent canoeing and the opportunity to see bird life from the water.
Murray Marathon
The Murray River is host to the longest canoe race in the world. The annual Murray Marathon is held in December and attracts over 6,000 participants. It is a gruelling 404-kilometre race stretching the length of the Murray between Yarrawonga and Swan Hill.
