Overview

Events

Known for its vibrant communities and packed calendar of events, The Murray plays host to a whole host of high profile events throughout the year. Join in the fun and frivolity at music and food and wine festivals, sporting events and art exhibitions.

Mildura

Travel up to Mildura early in the year for the Murray River International Music Festival and the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival and catch some of the creative energy buzzing around this art-loving town. For the literary types, the Mildura Writers Festival in July is a must. September brings the Mildura Country Music Festival, Australia's biggest showcase of independent country music artists. The Mildura Jazz, Food and Wine Festival in November combines the best of Australian modern and traditional jazz with the opportunity to sample the region's fine wines. Lastly, the biennial Mildura Palimpsest is a visual arts event that promotes artists' engagement with the cultural and natural environment of the Mildura and Murray Darling region.

Rev it up

Take the opportunity to catch some of the country's big names alongside local heroes at The Riverboats Music Festival, held beside the river each February in Echuca-Moama. Blues lover? Bring your harp and guitar and head along to the Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival in July.

Feel the need for speed? Take things up a notch with an Easter visit to the Mildura 100 Ski Race competition or the Club Marine Southern 80 in February, the largest waterskiing race in the world with over 40,000 spectators.

In the pond, on the greens

In December, try your luck at the Cod Opening Classic, Australia's largest inland fresh water fishing competition or head to Corowa for the Murray Golf Masters, held over three days and attracting the best amateur golfers in the region.

For a bit of a exercise and a whole lot of fun, sign up for the Massive Murray River paddle. This popular local event has been running since 1969 and covers a distance of 404km over five days.
