Overview

Canoeing & kayaking

There's no better way to connect with the river than to be in it. Leap into your fast-paced river adventure at the Murray Gates section of the Upper Murray near Corryong. Tackle level five rapids with local adventure operators or paddle at your own pace on a solo or guided trip through pristine natural landscapes around Safes Lagoon on Gunbower Island or the Barmah wetlands.

A beginner's guide

Take it easy at the lower Murray River, an area free from rapids and suitable for beginners. Hire a canoe and soak up the calming river atmosphere as you paddle past red gums. Pull into shady riverside clearings for a bush picnic or a spot of fishing.

Wetlands getaway

Venture into the depths of the Barmah Forest near Echuca-Moama. Cruise through the calm waters of the floodplains to the serene sounds of native birds and frogs. The best time to take this route is in spring, when the river floods and you can weave through the trees.

Experience the otherworldly beauty of Lake Mulwala on a guided kayak tour and cool down at one of the sandy river beaches off Gunbower Creek, just west of Echuca. Follow the recreational trail at Safe's Lagoon on Gunbower Island, approximately 6 kilometres from Koondrook. Spot the native birds and try to reel in a famous Murray cod before heading towards Mildura, where the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and Kings Billabong offer excellent canoeing options.

Murray Marathon

Sign up to the iconic Murray Marathon, the longest canoe race in the world. The annual event is held in December and hundreds of participants join to complete the 404-kilometre race running over five days from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill – passing through Tocumwal, Picnic Point, Echuca, Torrumbarry, Cohuna and Murrabit on the way.
