Farms of the Yarra Valley
An afternoon or a weekend indulging in the Yarra Valley's excesses occasionally induces a guilt-trip, so a trip past a farm gate to stock up on fruit is easily justified, if not actively encouraged.
There's nothing like the taste of a juicy cherry or strawberry plucked straight from the bush, or freshly-picked fruit preserved into jams and chutneys. Grab yourself a map, pick your fruit, then linger in the farm cafés and enjoy the sounds of farm life.
Cherries and berries
Cherry-picking season is short and sharp, so get along to Cherryhill Orchards and clamber up ladders in the postcard-perfect orchard to fill your own buckets with the sweet, ripe fruit.
Pick your own berries and cherries at Blue Hills Berries and Cherries, and serve them with the jams and syrups snapped up at Kookaberry Berry Farm.
Myriad stonefruit and lovely lavender
It's like a tongue-twister at Rayner's Stonefruit Orcard and Peach Café, with the standard freshly-picked stonefruit available to purchase seasonally alongside delights like pluots, plumcots and peachums. Take a guided tractor tour with Len to discover hundreds of stonefruit that you never knew existed.
Wander through stunning lavender fields in the (very) south of France – Wandin to be precise at Warratina Lavender Farm. Gawp in envy at the display gardens and indulge in a Devonshire tea.
Fruit-picking season is generally warm, so bring a hat and sunscreen and make sure you wear suitable footwear. Look after your berries on the drive home by gently packing them in your own cooler bag or Esky.
