Overview

Camping

Pitch a tent and set up camp under canopies of stars, dwarfed by native trees. Spend your nights around the campfire, delighting in the calls of resident birds and the odd visit from a wandering wombat.

Tap into an immense range of national parks and reserves to call home. Take your pick from sites set in dramatic coastal reserves, at the river's edge or against a backdrop of granite cliffs and sandstone ranges.

Covering all bases

Seasoned bush campers and creature-comfort seekers will find suitable options at Victoria's national reserves and holiday parks. Experience camping luxury in the comfortable surrounds of a holiday park or at a serviced campground, complete with flush toilets, barbecues and hot showers.

Keep it simple at a standard campground where just the basics − fireplaces, non-flush toilets and a water supply − are covered. For the truly adventurous, there's always the option to BYO everything and rough it in the secluded bush.

Camping in parks and reserves

Camping is permitted in 25 of Victoria's 35 national parks. There are different types of camping available in parks, reserves and forests throughout Victoria, some with laundries, cabins, flats or lodges.

Some camping areas are without facilities.

Bush (dispersed) camping

Bush camping is permitted in some of the larger or more remote parks within Victoria. Generally, access is more difficult and campers need to be self-sufficient and well prepared for emergencies.

Care for the environment

You can help look after our parks and reserves in the following ways:

  • Leave pets and firearms at home
  • Light fires only in designated fireplaces, or use a gas or fuel stove
  • Observe total fire bans
  • Remember that all native plants and animals are protected
  • Keep to roads and tracks
  • Take your rubbish with you

Bookings and permits

Fees and permits to camp in Victoria's national parks vary. You'll need to book ahead at the most popular national parks, especially in busy holiday periods. To book a campsite visit Parks Victoria or call 13 19 63.
