Melbourne to Sydney Coastal Drive
Day 2: Phillip Island to Walhalla via Mt Baw Baw
192 km/119 miles, about 3 hours
Jump aboard a wildlife cruise out to the Seal Rocks fur seal colony and greet the inquisitive creatures as they approach the boat or zoom in on the seals using the state-of-the-art cameras at Nobbies marine centre. Get up close with furry friends along the boardwalks of the Koala Conservation Centre.
Explore the Phillip Island's tranquil wetlands, flush with migratory birds, before journeying to the imposing granite cliffs and golden beaches of Cape Woolamai.
Take in the iconic sights of the island from great heights with Phillip Island Helicopters. Look down over the moored fishing fleet of San Remo, the historic Churchill Island Homestead and the powerful surf beaches of the Cape.
After some memorable sightseeing, stop to feed the pelicans at San Remo on your way to Inverloch, an easy 40 kilometres away. Dig into a sumptuous feast of fresh fish and chips while you take in the spectacular coastline of this popular seaside town.
Leave the coast behind and head for the hills: to Baw Baw National Park. Get outdoors and revel in the spectacular alpine scenery. Embrace snow sports in winter and outdoor adventures among the snow gum forests in the summer months.
Unwind on the short drive to historic Walhalla, a tiny town of less than 20 residents that's been lovingly preserved as it was in its 1860s gold-mining heyday. Explore the old hotels, shops, school and churches.
If you're keen to experience history, pan for gold down at Stringers Creek, ride the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, or take a ghost tour to the old cemetery on the hill. Venture deep into the mountain on a tour of the original workings of the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine.
Relaxi by open fires over spectacular views of the valley in a local B&B.
