Have a car free day

Incorporate car free days into your holiday. And, if you're travelling within a city or town, see what's within walking or cycling distance – nothing beats seeing a city on foot or by pedal power.

Seek out guided walking tours, select a hotel close to a station or tram route, rent a bike, or just hit the road on your own two feet.

On your bike
Melbourne is a great place to get on a bike. Flat surfaces? Tick. Scenic routes? Tick. Bass-Strait breezes to blow your hair back into shape when you take your helmet off? Tick.

Fed Square's Rentabike offers helmets, locks and maps along with your bike. They also run the much-loved Real Melbourne Bike Tours, which reveals the city's quirky secrets – from a barber with free beer, to a shop with 15,000 cookbooks.

Free spirits can go it alone down the Bay Trail. Cycle from St Kilda to Brighton Beach and grab a train home – bikes travel free.

In regional Victoria, discover plentiful cycling paths and rail trails.

Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle
Hop on and hop off the free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle as it stops at key destinations around the city, including the Melbourne Museum, Queen Victoria Market, Lygon Street, the Melbourne Aquarium, Docklands, Chinatown and the Royal Botanic Gardens. The shuttle runs between 9.30am and 4.30pm daily. The complete trip takes around 90 minutes.

Public transport
Make the best use of Victoria's public transport system during your stay. It puts you in closer contact with the beautiful scenery and welcoming locals at your destination and it's less stressful than driving in an unfamiliar place.

Melbourne has a fast, efficient and user-friendly train system, with coverage to most destinations and frequent services. Flinders Street Station, on the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets, is the hub of Melbourne’s train system, and all trains begin or end their journey there.

Melbourne's trams and light rail service give the city a distinctive character and provide a scenic way to explore the city and inner suburbs like Richmond, St Kilda and South Yarra.

V/Line
V'Line is Victoria's regional transporter. Jump on a train or coach and explore regional Victoria – look out for great rail and bus deals.
