The Eureka Centre, at the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat, stands at the site of one of the most significant events in Australia’s history – the Eureka Rebellion.

In December 1854, Ballarat’s diggers took up arms against a corrupt and unjust goldfields administration. After years of oppression, the bloody battle that followed led to the birth of true democracy in Australia.

The Eureka Rebellion was a revolution; it was a struggle for a principle, a stand against injustice and oppression. - The birthplace of Australian democracy!

In France it was the storming of the Bastille, in America it was the Boston Tea Party, Lexington and Concord and in Australia - the Battle of the Eureka Stockade. Each represented a step in the march to liberty and democratic freedoms. Mark Twain wrote that Eureka was "a victory won by a battle lost".

EUREKA STOCKADE GARDENS

These 19th century pleasure gardens are at the site set aside by the people of Ballarat in the 1870s to commemorate the Eureka Rebellion. Relax and take time to reflect, visit the 1880s Monument, the 2004 Eureka Circle and the all abilities Eureka Playground.

THE EUREKA CENTRE

Visitors will experience the tensions and the drama of the Eureka Rebellion as they move through a series of galleries that employ multi-media technology to vividly bring the Eureka Story to life.

After reliving the battle, visitors will move to the Contemplation Space. Here they can rest, gather their thoughts and reflect upon the significance of Eureka in Australia’s history.

Finally visitors may choose to relax in the Stockade Coffee Kiosk, or you may wish to browse the Eureka Shop for that special souvenir.
