| Akin to a stylish version of a university cafeteria, the Threshermans is indeed nestled right between the Melbourne University and RMIT campuses. Long wooden tables inside and out house varied groups of people, from students to locals to the occasional business-type grabbing a cheap lunch. This is probably one of the only places in Melbourne where you can still eat lunch for a fiver, especially in Carlton. Fresh fruit juices are available, as well as a wide selection of affordable plates, such as stir-fries, soup and bread, pizza and pasta. Out on the sidewalk, the same food takes on all the class and sophistication of plates that cost four times as much just up the sidewalk on Lygon Street. While the vaulted ceilings and brick walls aren't particularly well-suited to a quiet conversation in the middle of lunch, stopping by for a croissant early rewards the customer with a quietude that can only be achieved in big old buildings.
