The Aladdin's cave of books in the State Library draws hordes of literature addicts from all over the cultural capital and this cafe completes their collective wish list, giving them a place to immediately devour their findings. Located within the library's humbling Victorian building, Mr Tulk (named for the first state librarian, Augustus Tulk) retains the heritage feel, emphasising its features with rich chocolatey tones and polished timber. The library-ish decor is greatly appreciated by the aforementioned bookworms, who can happily spread out at the communal tables with their books and a coffee. Chef Andy Kubale is formerly of the Melbourne Wine Room, an illustrious pedigree that bodes well for Mr Tulk's menu. However, they are keeping things fairly simple and accessible, with a range of rolls and flatbreads supplemented by daily specials.
