About the Mornington Peninsula wine region

Mornington Peninsula winery

It might seem unbelievable that just an hour from Melbourne you can find yourself among a landscape of sweeping hills, winding country lanes and tranquil bayside views, but even more remarkable is the Mornington Peninsula’s ability to produce so many elegant wines.

Surrounded by Port Phillip Bay, Westernport Bay and Bass Strait, the Mornington Peninsula has a unique maritime climate.

The principal variety grown in this relatively small region is pinot noir.  Small differences in aspect, elevation and soils each contribute to the varied character of its wines, with chardonnay, pinot gris, shiraz and even tempranillo worth seeking out.

Here, the grandeur of cliff-top mansions and the easy proximity of good wineries and excellent eateries combine to convey a mood of provincial Europe.

John Mitchell, owner of Montalto Vineyard & Olive Grove, believes that the Peninsula contains all the ingredients for an indulgent break or day trip. “It is home to stunning pinot noir, fine restaurants, world-class golf courses, national parks and seaside villages.”

Keep an eye out for the Mornington Peninsula Gourmet logo at food stores and cafés, where you’ll find the best local produce. In warmer months, look out for farm gates selling juicy cherries, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. In this cultured seaside escape, even cellar doors offer contemporary fare.
