Heathcote wine region
Heathcote’s ancient Cambrian soils have earned it a reputation as one of the finest shiraz-producing areas in the world. Red soil and a warm, summer climate tempered by cool, southerly winds help produce robust wines of power and weight with great texture.
Shiraz is Heathcote’s flagship variety but it also produces superb cabernet sauvignon, and has had success with viognier and riesling.
Heathcote has developed its reputation in a relatively short period of time, with most of the region’s wineries dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Most of the wineries are small and family owned, producing limited amounts of wine using traditional methods. With winemakers’ numbers growing, Heathcote continues to make its mark on the global market.
Taste the wines and meet the winemakers at cellar doors all year round or visit in October when the local winemakers gather to showcase their iconic wines at the Heathcote Wine and Food Festival.
