Recommended duration: 2 hours
Highlights: Welcome Nugget, Chinese Village and Gold Monument, Gold Museum, Mt Buninyong. The trail then takes in Sovereign Hill Lookout and the Ballarat Goldfields
The Ballarat Gold Trail takes you on an absorbing journey through the city and its mining past.
Beginning outside the Visitor Information Centre at the Centenary of Gold Discovery Monument in Sturt Street, the two-hour self-drive tour visits 16 historic sites, each of which is accompanied by a sign detailing its gold rush history.
From Sturt Street the trail heads north to the Welcome Nugget and Black Hill Sign, before turning south to the miners’ cottages opposite The Eureka Centre, the Chinese Village and Gold Monument, Gold Museum and the pretty town of Buninyong. While in Buninyong, hike the nature trail to the top of Mt Buninyong.
The trail then takes in Sovereign Hill Lookout and the Ballarat Goldfields (a working gold mine) before exploring several of the mines dug during the 1850s. Take time to enjoy the splendid views along the way.
