Alexandra Timber Tramway

Quick facts

  • Population approximately 1,850
  • 130 kilometres north-east of Melbourne
  • Gateway to Lake Eildon, Victoria's houseboat holiday capital
  • Home to some of Victoria's best trout fishing.

Known as Redgate during the gold rush era, the major farming and service centre of Alexandra has become a popular base for holidays in the Eildon region.

Stroll along the wide tree-lined streets past historic buildings that include the National Trust-classified Post Office, National Bank and law courts, and discover arts and crafts such as pottery and glassware in quality gift shops and galleries.

Revisit the past at the Timber Tramway and Museum that displays artefacts from the timber industry of the last century, or join in the fun of the local community market.

If you're looking for outdoor adventures, the choices range from relaxing and indulgent to the 'adrenalin pumping'. Cruise around Lake Eildon in a chartered houseboat, or experience the thrill of water sports such as waterskiing, kayaking and wakeboarding. You'll find some of the best trout fishing in Victoria in the nearby waterways, especially the Goulburn River and Eildon Pondage.

Enjoy tranquil bushland, native wildlife and panoramic views of the lake and mountains on the trails of Lake Eildon National Park. The dramatic Cathedral Range offers invigorating hikes to the rugged peaks for magnificent views over the valleys and farmland, as well as rock climbing for the more adventurous.
