Wilderness parks
There are three wilderness parks in Victoria, covering a total of 202,050 hectares. Wilderness parks are large areas of land and native plant and animal communities that have remained relatively unaltered by European settlement of Australia.
Big Desert Wilderness Park
Big Desert Wilderness Park is home to a variety of birds, reptiles and mammals. A popular destination for experienced hikers, the park was Victoria's first official wilderness. Because of its status, no facilities are provided.
Avon Wilderness Park
Situated between Licola and Dargo, south of Lake Tali Karng and surrounding the headwaters of Mount Hump Creek is a vast area of untracked country of over 4,000 hectares. This area is for experienced and dedicated bushwalkers only. The forests vary from sub-alpine woodlands and open areas to dense, tall forests of mountain ash.
Access to the park is from Licola on the Heyfield-Jamieson Road. There is no vehicle access into the wilderness park. Popular activities include bush camping, fishing, bushwalking, canoeing.
Wabba Wilderness Park
Wabba Wilderness Park is a forested wilderness area in the foothills of the Great Divide. Excellent opportunities for self-reliant recreation activities exist, including walking and bush camping. There are no facilities and no access for vehicles or horses.
Access to the park is via the Corryong-Nariel Road and Gibb Range Road, south-west of Corryong.
