Morwell

Morwell

Morwell is best known as the centre of the state's brown coal mining and electricity production industry. Coal was discovered in the Latrobe Valley in 1873, and mining began in Morwell in 1955. For 80 years, coal mining and electricity production has been a major source of employment for Morwell and surrounding towns. Visit Powerworks to experience multimedia and interactive exhibits on the coal mining industry, view giant dredges, join a tour of one of the three open cut coal mines and gain an inside view of a power station and its impressive technology.

Another highlight of Morwell is the beautiful Centenary Rose Garden, which forms the western entrance to the Morwell business district. Proudly showcasing over 4,000 bushes, including more than 260 varieties in 110 beds, the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden is one of the finest in the southern hemisphere. The four acres of garden is cared for by volunteers from all areas of the Latrobe Valley and beyond.

Morwell is also home to one of Gippsland's major cultural facilities, the Latrobe Regional Gallery. Established in 1970, the gallery's permanent collection is predominantly contemporary Australian Art, post 1970s. It also holds a number of works on paper of historical significance to the Latrobe Valley and the Gippsland Region by artists including Jessie Trail, Ethel Spowers and Evelyne Syme.
