About the Sunbury wine region
Sunbury is the closest winemaking area to Melbourne and also one of Victoria’s oldest, having produced wine as early as the 1860s. Its cool, dry climate produces elegant wines which, combined with its historic bluestone wineries and proximity to the city, make it a unique wine region.
Just 15 minutes north-west of Melbourne Airport, Sunbury’s landscape of deep valleys, steep hills and rolling foothills is intensely variable, with soil types ranging from sandy loam to red volcanic and black basalt. This allows it to produce great purity of flavour in chardonnay, pinot gris, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon.
The area’s signature wine, however, is shiraz. The grape obviously responds beautifully to the region’s dry, warm summers and cool winters. Sunbury shiraz has become renowned for its restrained power, great balance, length and savoury elements.
The Sunbury region is home to about 20 wineries and is known for its small, family owned vineyards. The best of these have cellar doors and restaurants, often housed in picturesque, historic buildings.
Being so close to Melbourne makes it easy to discover for yourself all that Sunbury has to offer.
