Theatres – Goldfields
A visit to one of the local theatres in the Goldfields provides a remarkable window to the opulent and luxurious times of the gold rush era.
Be captivated by the superbly restored heritage buildings including her Majesty's Theatre in Ballarat, which has been entertaining audiences for more than 125 years, and Bendigo's immaculately restored Capital Theatre which, when built in 1873, was the largest hall in Victoria, other than the Melbourne Town Hall.
In the historic village of Eaglehawk, the Star Cinema offers patrons rows of comfortable crimson couches to sit on and glasses of local wine to enjoy during the film. With its original production room in use, a visit to the Star provides a grand sense of history combined with modern comforts.
Castlemaine's Theatre Royal is also worth a visit. It is the oldest continuously operating theatre in Victoria and it was here than Lola Montez once performed her daring spider dance to a boisterous crowd of miners.
